About Us

Kootenay Snowshoeing was established in 2013 to expand the backcountry experiences offered by BettyGoHard to include males and females of all ages.

BettyGoHard was started in 2007 by Natasha Lockey out of a frustration at the lack of inspiration for women to get out into action.  Originally, Natasha envisioned an extreme community providing images and stories to inspire women to go bigger and acheive their dreams.  'Extreme' to Natasha is about stepping outside your comfort zone not about dropping a 40ft cliff on your snowboard.

Natasha is an outdoor enthusiast.  From snowboarding to mountain biking, kayaking to surfing; if it is fun she is keen to give it a go.  Being an everyday human/female herself she understands the intimidation that new sports can have to beginners, however she does not believe that that should stop anyone from finding new passions and having the skills to truly enjoy old passions.  She is committed to giving people the confidence, motivation and skills that will enable them to enjoy the outdoors as she does.

Originally from New Zealand, Natasha and her husband Ian came to Rossland, BC for a six week snowboard trip in 2002.  Falling in love with the area they secured a lodge management job for the following winter and are still living the dream 12 winters later.

That first winter waiting for the lifts to start turning the Lockeys were looking for anyway they could play in the abundance of snow they were surrounded by.  Finding a couple of pairs of snowshoes at the lodge they were introduced to the idea of snowshoeing for the fun of it not just to ascend the closest mountain to ride back down.  Recognizing the potential of snowshoeing as a safe way of hiking in the winter, great exercise, and the ability to go almost anywhere, they couldn't understand why the Canadians were not addicted to this sport.  Through the Women Out Walking movement Natasha developed the first ladies snowshoe program and we have been building on that success ever since.

Introducing locals and guests alike to our Winter Wonderland, as well as giving people a reason to look forward to the winter season inspires and motivates Natasha.  She is constantly creating and adapting the programs, building more opportunities for people to learn safe backcountry travel skills, snow science, new trails and most importantly find friends to inspire them to get out as often as they can.

Join Natasha and her experienced staff on a backcountry adventure this winter.  Programs run in Rossland, Castlegar, Champion Lakes & Creston.
